The Song

(acrylics and copics on 40x50cm; took one afternoon)

Finally. After all these years of being an artist, finally, I was able to draw what animates me to draw, what inspires me, what makes me go on, no matter what. Actually it is extremely simple, just like this artwork, but very hard to describe/catch, just like the spirit dragon.
What I’m refering to here is something I call “the song”. Every artwork is accompanied by one, every brush stroke has its source from it, every idea inspired by it. Though with song I don’t mean simply a melody or text, those “songs” contain more: feelings, thoughts, sentiments, pictures, smells, etc. They can be a thunderstorm, a raging sea, a soft wind, the smeel of a forest, the panorama view at the top of a mountain, a freshly cut orange, asphalt after rain, whatever – imagine it, it makes you feel something, doesn it? The song is similar to that, but accompanied with reason, idea, thought, emotion …
The songs are always there, burn inside me. I don’t know where they come from, from which depths they arise, from which heights they fall. I only know, that they devour me, when I capture them and not release them. And if you let them free, let them evolve and realize them, they can take you away to places that look like melting dreamscapes, as reality is always present, but not clear defined. A truly wonderful place for a symbolist like me.
This “song”-stuff may sound confusing – another reason why I never really tried to describe it, I’m much better with drawing than with describing something with only words. Our language is way too limited.

It was great to draw this work. I didn’t sketch it, just started straight ahead, no concepts, no outlines. Just the song, me and an empty white piece of paper (and of course all my art tools~). And I drew in a way, where one mistake can ruin the whole work and there is barely any chance to correct it. But the song, that came with the artwork and accompanied the whole process, took me away to a place where something like “mistake” doesn’t exist. And even though the work is not perfect, it is exactly the way it should be – according to the song.
An interesting experience for a perfectionist like me, who always searches for things to make better (and also always finds them. I’m my own worst critic, haha)

See the artworks, catch a glimpse of their song.

  1. Genial!

  2. I think the mountains, the woods, the waterfalls…all of them sing their song, also the people. Songs of each one process part of song of the others, the trees process a part of the song of the wind in their own song, like your song process elements from other people and things’ song with your own. So everything in the world is linked by the song.

Btw, there is in the books of the Tawny Man series of Robin Hoob a guy who use magic by combining sound of the environnement and his sentiments in songs of power. Reminds me somewhat what you’re telling here.

I absolutely agree with you there. If one is willing to listen, then such songs can be found pretty much everywhere.

Sounds like something I’d enjoy to read c:

      1. We should try once to listen to the music together 😉

I’ve the books both in “real” and digital if you want ;p
